Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose a counsellor?
It is very important that you feel safe and comfortable with your counsellor. Research tells us that how well you connect with the counsellor is likely to determine how successful the outcome is.
This may mean meeting a few different counsellors before you begin. Only you can decide, do not be afraid to ask questions or request further information before making up your mind. Counsellors understand and respect this and would encourage you to do so.
How do I know if a counsellor is qualified?
Most professional counsellors are members of one or more professional bodies like the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) or UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). A professional body such as the BACP will check the counsellor’s qualifications before including their name on their register of qualified counsellors. Being registered with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation. All counsellors at Person to Person Counselling are registered members of BACP and also hold personal liability insurance.
How long do people stay in counselling?
There is no single answer to this question! It is an individual decision and can vary enormously. For some people a couple of months are sufficient, while others find they benefit from longer term work. This can be discussed at the initial consultation and at regular points throughout the counselling work if necessary.
What does confidentiality in counselling mean?
Confidentiality is one of the cornerstones of the counselling profession. It means that whatever we discuss in our sessions together will not be shared with third parties unless you specifically request it. There are a few exceptions to this, for example, if your counsellor were to have serious concerns for your safety or that of someone else, they would need to contact a third party, such as your GP. Your counsellor would endeavour to discuss any break of confidentiality with you first if at all possible and encourage you to participate in any further action. All notes in connection to the therapy will be kept in a locked cabinet in accordance with the Data Protection Act. You have the right to access these at any point.
